Since the terrorist attack of
7 October 2023, the Federation of Jewish Communities in Hungary (Mazsihisz) has
been following the fate of the hostages kidnapped by the Palestinian terrorist
organization Hamas with great concern, praying for them regularly in our
synagogues and helping the Israeli communities under attack with the means at
our disposal.
So Mazsihisz welcomes the fact that 467 days after the attack,
Israel and Hamas have today reached the first agreement that promises tangible
results in freeing the hostages held in inhumane conditions and bringing a halt
to months of fighting.
Under the agreement, Hamas
will release 33 hostages in the first round, although the Israeli government
reports that a total of 98 hostages are still alive. As today's agreement only
provides for the release of a third of the hostages, Mazsihisz maintains that
full success will only be possible if the terrorist organization does not breach
the ceasefire and each and every hostage is returned to their families.
