It is no coincidence that the Dohány Street Synagogue, an iconic building of the Hungarian Jewish community, is the venue for the Budapest Festival Orchestra's gala concert. We can all be proud, Hungarians, Jews and non-Jews, Budapest residents and non-Budapest residents alike, of the tremendous development the Hungarian capital underwent in the second half of the 19th century, and of the contribution made by important Hungarian Jewish figures who have forever written their names into the history books of Budapest and the country. Brilliant Hungarian Jewish scientists, architects, writers, poets, painters, composers, bankers, industrialists, publishers and patrons of the arts have left their mark on the Hungarian capital.

In the Dohány Street Synagogue, one of the most important classical music ensembles of Hungary and the world will pay tribute to the Hungarian capital, which was united 150 years ago. The Budapest Festival Orchestra, 40 years of history this year, is considered one of the ten best symphony orchestras in the world. Music critics in major European and American daily newspapers ranked Iván Fischer sixth in the international top 10 conductors' list.

For nearly a decade and a half, the BFO has featured on the international charts of symphony orchestras. In 2010, Gramophone music magazine ranked it the ninth best orchestra in the world, and last year the Festival Orchestra was awarded Orchestra of the Year, after a professional rating and audience vote. Iván Fischer, Music Director of the Festival Orchestra and founder of the Vicenza Opera Festival, was made an honorary citizen of the northern Italian city on 23 October.

The ensemble, led by Iván Fischer, will give a concert on Sunday 19 November from 7:30 pm.
